A trip to Ruth Bancroft's Garden

Who was this lady? Damn, I thought I was crazy but this lady took it to a whole new level. Sometimes it's hard for me to walk away. I see a plant and I want to give it a home. Ruth Bancroft's garden is several acres and literally has thousands of plants. I think I literally died and then went to heaven... as I'm sure others do when they visit. I walked away invigorated. I don't think onto this point I'd ever seen another  agave other than Agave Americana or Agave Blue Glow. Seeing the Salmiana or Atrovirens was a revelation and you know I have the space for that! Note to self: buy an Agave Salmiana or Antrovirens and a couple of those tree aloes.

Nunc : Latin for "present", or "these days". You may wonder where is the garden at present? Well it's not finished. Nowhere near from finished actually. There is so much more to do, but yet my body is tired and I can never decide what I should do next. Every time I set out to do something, I see something different that needs my attention.  My goal is to have a garden that is self sustaining. I want to get everything in the dirt then stop helping it one day and see what happens, like a strange science experiment. I love looking at the Mayan temples or Ankgor Wat to see what happens when nature takes over.  After a while, I can go back and thin something out or decide that a certain plant isn't working and give it away. Dulce periculum ( latin phrase: Live life on the edge)

I haven't written any post for a while. The garden has had some setbacks and some new turns. Some plants have grown and others have not thrived. Overall, it is becoming established and I keep trying to think of ways to make it more beautiful. I'll add some pictures for you to see. I also started a garden group in my neighborhood. It's great talking with plant people and when we hang out, it's really interesting to feed off each others energy. The latin phrase " Dulce Periculum" reminds me of my garden. All the plants are living on the edge. Literally, they are hanging and sometimes they do fall. I also fall sometimes trying to get to a certain area. I'm not sure they had this in mind when they coined this phrase. One doesn't really think about gardening when one thinks about living life on the edge, but so many plants do seem to thrive on the edge. Have you ever notices that? How Aloe*N Garden was created

Back in 2019, when the world was very much in pre-pandemic mode. My wife and I decided to move from our 8th story condo in the East Bay to a house which could allow my daughter more room to roam and explore. We had two dogs, and unfortunately, they had to walk one city block from our unit to the elevator and go down 8 stories just to go sniff outside. Sometimes accidents happen and that isn't how you really want to start your Monday morning.  We searched high and low and finally settled on a house with a hillside garden in the back. The agent who listed the house painted the interior all white and threw 3 tons of mulch on the hill and planted two plants in the hard clay soil. Those plants soon died.  When trying to figure out what to do with the backyard, I remembered the gardens I grew up in and the places I had lived.
