Nunc

Nunc : Latin for "present", or "these days". You may wonder where is the garden at present? Well it's not finished. Nowhere near from finished actually. There is so much more to do, but yet my body is tired and I can never decide what I should do next. Every time I set out to do something, I see something different that needs my attention.

My goal is to have a garden that is self sustaining. I want to get everything in the dirt then stop helping it one day and see what happens, like a strange science experiment. I love looking at the Mayan temples or Ankgor Wat to see what happens when nature takes over.

After a while, I can go back and thin something out or decide that a certain plant isn't working and give it away. One day when I'm gone, I doubt that anyone will take care of it, but still a part of me wants someone to go back there and say "wow, what's the story behind this?" I want someone to see a 45 foot inflorenscence on the sidewalk and ring the bell or write a note asking to get a better look.

We may not live here one day and 25 years from now I wonder what it will look like. I will have left an indelible mark on a plot of earth. Perhaps nobody will care. Perhaps someone will buy the house one day and decide everything with thorns will need to come out. My hope though is that it will mature and be a place of beauty...a Paradeisos. When that happens and I'm long gone perhaps someone will wonder who was behind this? Maybe I'll be remembered by a child who grew up on the street that will tell the new homeowners about the guy who used to be on the hill gardening. Maybe they will wonder. Maybe someone will tend to it or love it.

When you think about the present, you often think about the past. You think about the future. What will the future bring? Only time will tell.

Here are some picture of the garden. Things have grown. I added a fountain...that was a story itself. Every now and then I find a great deal like 30 Blue Glow Agaves that I purchased for just a few dollars a plant. In 5 years that will look very cool. The California poppies are starting to self seed on the hill and the echium is getting close to it's first year of flowering.
